About the program

The Master of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine is a 36-month program that provides students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies to deliver highly effective care to patients of all ages in a variety of settings, including in private practice and hospitals. The program features both classroom and clinical training in acupuncture studies, emphasizing hands-on learning under direct supervision of experienced faculty. In addition, students receive specialized training in Chinese herbal medicine.

In the first year, students learn essential foundational theories and principles of both Eastern and Western medicine. You will immediately begin to practice clinical skills and develop the professional competencies necessary to become a successful acupuncturist with a special emphasis on acupuncture needle techniques and Chinese herbal medicine. Students begin their clinical experiences by observing and assisting in the delivery of patient care.

In the second-year, students integrate fundamental material from year one of the program with more advanced concepts of Eastern and Western medical theory as well as Chinese herbal medicine. Students also develop professional competencies and learn to formulate a diagnosis and treatment plan. Students continue their clinical experience as interns responsible for the management and delivery of patient care.

In the third year, students complete clinical experiences and are placed in a variety of clinical settings providing patient care under the direct supervision of senior faculty. Students continue their professional development by completing a series of practice management courses. Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible to sit for national board examinations and seek licensure.

On top of the in-class experience, you’re in clinical three days each week, so you really get a chance to perfect your diagnostic technique in real-world situations. My clinical work is on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. It’s very hands-on, which is great. Plus it’s really professional. It’s like practicing for a job interview the whole time you’re there.

Dedicated to the success of every student

Students at MCPHS are professionally focused and driven, and represent almost every state in the U.S. and dozens of foreign countries. MCPHS not only enjoys a rich diversity in our student body, but also offers a rich diversity of healthcare programs, paralleling the interdisciplinary team approach in modern healthcare institutions.

Experience in the world’s finest healthcare institutions

Our students have access to the most sought-after internships, clinical placements and research opportunities right in our own backyard. From the leading hospitals in central Massachusetts and New Hampshire to Boston’s world-class Longwood Medical and Academic Area, our students gain valuable, real-world experience in institutions, including the #1 pediatric hospital in the country and New England’s top-ranked cancer treatment center, to name a few.

Faculty focused on our students

Unlike research institutions, our faculty are focused on one thing: teaching. Our distinguished full-time faculty are fellows of national academies and have served as presidents of national professional associations. They are editors of medical journals, investigators on federally funded research projects, and business leaders. Above all, they are mentors to our students, highly available and supportive.
